I would never recommend paying a debt to any collector who proceeds via a phone call without also sending a letter and introducing themselves as a licensed WI collector, and providing their full name, address and contact information. The callers contacting you, on the other hand, could very well be running a scam, posing as collectors, when in fact they do not even have any legal right to collect the debt in question. If you pay them, you could therefore end up paying the same debt twice when the legitimate owner of the account moves against you with proper documentation. All telephonic callers, collectors who are only seeking you online or via email should therefore be presumed to be scammers and criminals until proven otherwise. Such a presumption will rarely be proven wrong in my experience.
