I have guardianship of my granddaughter who is 5 years old. Her father went to court to establish paternity and was granted supervised visits when she was a newborn. This supervised visits angered him and he has seen her a total of 3 times her first year of life. He has not seen her since she was 2. He has set up visits and then cancels them. He now wants to be a part of her life and is threatening going after custody. Is there any law that says if he has no contact for a period of time that he looses his rights? The mother is my daughter. She see us quite often. Neither of them have paid any support.
Answer
His rights do not disappear unless another potential father has requested an adoption. As the guardian, unless he is dangerous to her, you have an obligation to facilitate the child's relationship with her father. You should contact the attorney who helped you establish the guardianship for more detailed advice.
