Question

Mom and dad are Florida residents. Mom has dementia and *may* need to go into a care facility. Does it have to be in Florida to retain her residency for estate purposes? My sister and I live in other states and may find a more suitable place closer to us, and Dad has no desire to move from Florida/

Answer

If she wants to be considered a resident of Florida for estate filing purposes, yes.
