Is ok to put a car with automatic trans in gear during normal cold high idle veh has a bit of a kick when put in gear or do you have to wait till idle goes down?
On cold days, you should let the engine warm for a minute or two. Then, if you press the accelerator to the floor for just a second and then let it up. This is done really fast. Floor it and let it right up. The fast idle should release, and hopefully you won't get that kick any more. You may have to press the accelerator down more than once to get the idle to release.
