Does a scientific consultant need file an LLC if doing short term consulting? What are the advantages?
Answer
If you are acting as a long-term temporary consultant doing research for a company and they want to be protected from being fined by the DUA for not treating you as an employee, then having a LLC protects all parties and you can be treated as a consultant.
The answer to the question depends on the scope of work and what you are doing for the company. A one-man LLC files as a Schedule C on your 1040.
Advantage of an LLC is that except for your own malpractice or direct tortuous acts you have no personal liability should something happen or a creditor seek to sue you.
However, without more information I cannot give you any definitive advice.
