Why does overdrive only work went car is warmed up?
These days with 5 and 6 speed gearboxes being the norm, overdrive is unusual. It should work anytime, but as o'drive is usually only fitted to older cars, or as an extra on such as old Land Rovers, which use heavy gear oils, it may be that this oil has to warm up a bit before you can successfully engage an o'drive. As you don't say what vehicle you are asking about, I can only generalise.
