Question

My 19 year old daughter in Virginia, who left home on her own over a year ago is out of control still and I am concerned she may be a victim of Pep Spice, causing her to have outbursts, hallucinations and in a downward spiral. Can I have her placed in a treatment center for evaluation of possible depression, bi polar disorder etc without her consent? I'm not sure if I have any legal rights to get her the help she needs and am afraid I may lose her for good.

Answer

The situation you present is painful and difficult. It may be possible for you to have her involuntarily committed if her condition presents an imminent danger to her life. Contact your local General District Court for information on the commitment process.

You may also consider guardianship proceedings, for which I strongly advise you consult an attorney.

I wish you success in your efforts to restore your daughter to health.
