How do people suddenly appear in pantomimes?
There are trapdoors in the stage and the actor is standing underneath on a small rising platform. The trapdoor slides open, usually accompanied with a puff of smoke and the actor is quickly raised up on to the stage and steps off the platform and the trapdoor slides shut again.
