Is A Clockwork Orange evil?
No. It's just a really good book. It asks a lot of questions aboutevil, and how we as a society should deal with evil, but the bookitself isn't evil. It is about a person who harms others, who goesthrough a kind of brainwashing process where he still *wants* tohurt people, but can't, because hurting people causes him intensepsychological pain. And then, because of the cruelty of thebrainwashing, it is removed, and he goes back to hurting people. Itasks questions about what we can do in society to stop people whenthey choose evil, and have no desire to change. What do we as asociety have a right to do in such cases... where does individualfreedom stop, and how much can society interfere with the freedomof people who are dangerous to others?
The film starring Malcolm McDowell was released in the early 70s.It was graphic in its attitude to violence. Its language wasadopted in part by some Skinhead groups who also took on some ofthe dress characteristics. The music added enormous effect and waslater released as an album. It was because of censorship that thefilm saw a short but very effective circuit in cinemas. Whilst maynot be evil, it came at a time where it had huge impact on theyouth of the time and was blamed for many violent culture copycatissues.
