Our school orchestra is playing songs from pirates of the carribean. Can I legally copy the DVD, pick out segments related to the songs we are playing, put them into one 4-minute clip and show it at a school event? If not, please explain which part of that I can't do. Thank you so much!

Not without risking a claim from the owner of the copyrights. Research to see who you need to pay for use of the materials.
