I was adviced to seek a mediator to resolve our divorce to save money, however, I am not sure if this will be appropiate since there is a restraining order for domestic violence on my husband who is a police officer. Please advice if this is a good idea or should I seek a matrimonial lawyer?

Since you have a restraining order unless you ammend it you will be in violation of the order. So either amend the order permitting the 2 of you to go to mediation or call my office and set up an appointment with me. I have been handling matrimonial cases for over 30 years.

At some point the Court will refer you to economic mediation, if you are unable to resolve the

economic issues. I would suggest that you hire an attorney because you need to engage in discovery to acquire information as to his pension and other benefits before you mediate. The expense of a divorce is largely where the parties engage in extensive motion practice as to issues involving child support, child custody, parenting time, and temporary spousal support.

This can be avoided by the parties working out these issues, with the advice of counsel.
