Playback is when an illegal bookmaker accepts a large wager, and attepts to cover part of his risk by placing a similar bet through a legitimate outlet - such as a Las Vegas casino, sometimes even helping to lower the odds. It's insurance against getting 'cleaned out' by someone betting a long shot. Common practice in organized crime.
